Here are some answers to common solar energy FAQs:
Q: How do solar panels save me money on my electricity bill?
A: There are two main ways that solar panels will save you money:
Installing a solar power system without a battery
When you install solar panels onto the roof of your home or business they will produce electricity that is fed directly into your premises, when the sun is shining. Any excess electricity produced by your solar panels (that is, electricity leftover after all your devices have been powered) is fed directly back into the national power grid. You will receive a credit for this electricity, known as feed-in, from your supplier.
Installing a solar battery
As above, except that now your solar power system will also be able to store excess electricity in a battery, which will be used to power your home once the sun goes down. Once your battery is fully charged, any excess electricity will still be fed into the grid, so you can receive credits from your supplier. If you use all the electricity in your battery, don’t worry, your electricity supply will be automatically switched over to the national grid.
In both cases all of these events happen automatically – you don’t have to do a thing! Your premises is still connected to the grid and automatically draws electricity from it at any time to supplement your solar power production.
Q: Why should I install a solar power system in my home or business?
A: Solar power is a renewable source of energy that reduces our reliance on coal-powered electricity. Not only that, you can save thousands of dollars annually off your electricity bill. While there are costs involved to install a solar power system, these costs will be recouped as the panels reduce or even eliminate your electricity bills. In fact, most systems pay for themselves within four years, and with the constant rise in electricity prices they are an excellent solution to saving money. In our experience a solar power system will provide an ongoing return on investment of between 20-40%.
Q: What would I be saving on my electricity bill if I were to install solar power?
A: Savings to your bills can vary between customers depending on their location, electricity use patterns and other factors. Using the Clean Energy Council’s system performance estimator, Watters can determine in advance of installation what the optimum system for your needs will produce in energy throughout the year. We can then translate that into expected savings for you with a Pay Back between two and four years.
Q: What size solar panel system should I purchase?
A: The system size is based on your energy demands and available roof space. There is also a solar pre-approval application to be completed before the optimal size is determined. Our team will explain all off the options during the initial consultation and answer any questions you may have.
Q: Are Watters Electrical an accredited installer of solar panel systems?
A: Yes, Watters Electrical are fully licensed and accredited to design and install solar systems for domestic and commercial premises.
Q: What information do I need to provide to receive an accurate proposal?
A: All we require from you is your most recent electrical bill or, if possible, a bill from both summer and winter seasons. After that, we’ll arrange a meeting and site visit to see if your property is suitable to have a solar energy system installed.
Q: Will I receive a government rebate?
A: Yes, there are two rebates in place, one for the customer and one for the installer. The rebate we receive allows us to discount your solar system. You also receive a rebate from your retailer for exporting solar energy to the grid.
Q: Does Watters Electrical offer finance for solar systems?
A: Yes, we are pleased to offer finance to eligible customers. Please contact our solar department to determine if you are eligible.
Q: Is a warranty provided?
A: Yes, Watters Electrical offers a 12-month workmanship warranty.
Product warranties for solar panels, inverters and batteries vary, but it is most common for solar panels to have a 25-year linear power warranty and a 10-year product warranty. Most inverters come with a 5-year warranty that can be extended like a normal warranty. Others come with 10 or more years, depending on the company.
Q: Will I have to change electricity companies?
A: No, when you have solar installed you do not have to switch to a new retailer.
However, when installing solar panels, it’s a great opportunity to shop around for a better deal. In particular, other retailers may offer different prices on the feed-in tariff.
Q: Is there any maintenance required on my solar energy system?
A: Watters Electrical offer cleaning services to all customers to ensure your panels are cleaned regularly to optimise the energy produced. We will proactively contact you about cleaning your panels, so you don’t have to keep note of when they are due. Once your system is installed and tested you will not have to do a thing and can simply enjoy watching your electricity bills go down!
